Adaptation written by Jean de Limur and taken from Jean Weber's novel "La seconde vie de Napoleon Premier". The project of making a movie about Napoleon's life dates back to the 1920's, when Chaplin wanted to launch Edna Purviance as a dramatic actress. In 1935, the film adaptation of Jean Weber's novel was assigned to Count Jean de Limur, who had been Chaplin's assistant for "A Woman of Paris".
