"Stowaway" is a scenario written for Paulette Goddard in 1936; Chaplin got the idea for it in Shanghai, when he saw American soldiers dance with "taxi-girls", Russian women who escaped from their country during the revolution. The screenplay for "A Countess from Hong Kong" originated from this scenario.
