This is a Mr. Chaplin film. The last real Charlie film was "Modern Times". With "Monsieur Verdoux" he already created an entirely new comic character. The new film is Chaplin's retort to McCarthyism. The kernel of the film is disclosed when the hero befriends a boy whose parents are ex-Communists and is hauled before the Un-America Activities Committee. "A King in New York" differs from its predecessors but still has other Chaplinesque elements such as an incomparable miming.
