Notes on "John Shifty/Hays Scenario". John Shifty was the youngest of a family of twenty. His father was Mortimer Shifty, the great empire builder of railroads and one of the most influential bankers of Wall Street. His son John was just the antithesis. He sympathies were all with the underdog, and he was kind and generous and altruistic in his ideals. That's why John viewed with anxiety his prospect of going home after he had been kicked out of Harvard College for his radical opinions.
