Charlie Chaplin's film "Monsieur Verdoux", opening in London next week, places him among the great actors of all time. Yet in Hollywood he had to face organised persecution. There are moments of bogus philosophising in the film, but it is one of the finest pieces of acting and dramatic construction ever seen.
