As a philosophical thinker, Chaplin is on a rather simple and obvious level. Once the idea on which the story is based has been stated - the idea that in a world that accepts organised killings on a huge scale, a mild little character with a mere habit of wife-murder feels entitled to pass unnoticed - one is in a position to do without having it explained.
